Semi-feral cat living in my house ... what to do if anything?

on November 13, cat My nibs disappeared. we live in a small town and some local people saw a cat matching his appearance was dependent on Marina. took a trap and catch a half-wild cat. ie he let me pet him, but was scared stiff and rigid. a visitor to let him go and catch the night he darted under the stairs of my house in my living room. he lived under the stairs my for about a month. he has no interest to my boyfriend and i. he sneaks out at night (i hear it). he mainly uses the litter box to put under there. he has food and a warm place to stay (it is cold here in NH). must call animal control or just keep it for now and let him live here until spring and then let go outside? I ran into a semi-feral cat in my old apartment and ended up loving it. By the end of two years he sat on my lap and nuzzled up to me. I never would have called animal control, because, yes, they will put it to sleep and no one will adopt it likely that he was half wild.
