A good treadmill can be worth thousands of dollars, and not just because of a good company's name. A treadmill is, in its function, rather simple: It's a rolling belt that...rolls. That's all. But the challenge to making a good treadmill doesn't lie in making a belt that rolls, it lies in making this belt roll smoothly, and making the machine robust enough to make it roll smoothly for years, while still providing high comfort and a very small device which doesn't take up too much space. That is where the challenge lies.

Cheap motorized treadmills aren't good in general. There are many companies who profit from customers who want to buy at low prices by selling them machines that work for a year and then crush under the weight or the exercise. This is how it should not be done, and this is precisely the reason why you should take care when deciding which model to buy, it isn't always easy, and you should know your turf, and be informed about motor strength, belt size and additional function before attempting to buy something, especially online.

Now some companies do provide good machines at a high quality level, and these companies are famous for doing so, and these models aren't always very pricey. A good treadmill can cost from $600 to $10,000 easily, but below there is no possibility of producing something that lasts two months even, and beyond this range the prices are just for additional features you would never need in your whole life. Deciding what is good for you is not easy, but you can be helped. There are some factors which you should keep an eye on when buying. First and foremost, try the models at your local store to get a feeling for them and find out if they're right for you and if they seem to be of good quality. Remember that these machines are supposed to last for months under daily running, so don't even think about buying something cheap if it doesn't feel solid. Also, take a look at the warranty. Generally speaking, warranties are long if the manufacturer uses quality parts which he knows won't break, ideally these run from several years to a lifetime. If a warranty only lasts 2 months, don't buy the model as it won't help you for long.

Good motorized treadmills to have some features such as a heart rate monitor, an inclination feature which allows you to simulate running up a hill and a calorie burning feature if you want to loose weight. These are essential and shouldn't be left unnoticed if you're looking to buy something useful.

Be sure to read reviews on the internet, other people might have bought just that model you want and may be able to tell you something about it, such as the state of the machine after 2 years of exercise, which is very important if you are on a budget. Because buying a machine at $1200 is cheaper than buying the same machine for $700 twice because it doesn't last two months, so be sure to check this thoroughly. The best test is always trying to run yourself on the machine to get a feeling for the size of the belt and know if you're comfortable with it.
